Book Review : One Indian Girl
I recently finished reading the book 'One Indian Girl' written by Chetan Bhagat. I couldn't stop myself but write a review of that..
I hated the lead character , Radhika. Is this how the writer or an Indian identifies an Indian girl? In most parts, she was portrayed cold blooded, very practical and confused as hell. She has more than enough money, people find her hot, oh wait, only some of them, otherwise she is nerd. She sometimes feels so monotonous in the way she allows the two of her boyfriends to interfere in her life, that she seems fake!; life AF (A fairy tale) 😉.
She goes on sleeping with them and suddenly, only when her mom gives her deadline to find groom ; she wants to get rid of them immediately, like quick. All the patience shown past follow ups seems to have vanished. She turns the whole world upside down, fight with them, hurt herself, her gadgets.. And then, finally settles down for what her mom wants.....
Girl, if you are so analytical and smart as you are portrayed , why could you not tell your boyfriends in the first place? Is it the problem with nerds, that they are emotionally unstable?
I found 'Brijesh' the real groom and the real hero. It was because he stood for Radhika's decision, stayed cool and composed ; she could actually escape her wedding on the wedding day itself. He was such a sweet guy! He actually showed the respect, affection, freedom and appreciation that Radhika has always wanted; Plus he was Rich!! 💰💵💶💳
The other two characters were insecure, needy and possessive about Radhika....
Or just that Chetan Bhagat ,wants to stick to this universal opinions,' Nobody understands woman' , ' A girl will do anything for her parents' typical men stuff! What is the point in writing a complete book for this??
Why did he include so much money, beautiful locations, international cuisine, chartered plane etc etc?? Radhika could be any Indian girl!! And I don't want to write about the connection between being nerd, intelligent and dark skin colour at the same time!
I think, 'THIS' is what he wants to portray. A woman may reach heights in her career, may outsource every bit of her household work, have handsome hunks and immature boys as boyfriends and what not! But, one thing for sure she can't do : 'Sort her own life!' Even if she had a fairy tale life, she has to be the Cinderella who looses her shoe in hurry and then the prince has to take all efforts to put things in place!!
This is completely in contrast with what he advertised this book as feminist book and what he did to make that book happen, interviewed 200 + women, invited Kangana Ranaut for the launch........
Even if you see the breakup and patch up scenes of the 3 affairs, Brijesh's break up was cool and patch up was progressive. On the other hand, the earlier break ups had no solid reason so do the patch ups!!! Brijesh was real feminist or humanist as the writer says!
I don't understand why the write couldn't stop himself from using so non fashionable name for Brijesh! 🧑 But if you see, Radhika is also not a glamorous one.....👩
All in all, he has to make a story fit for Bollywood drama and masala!
Why I read it? 📖Because, as in one scene, Radhika says,
" I didn't protest! May be I should have, but sometimes , if something feels so right (At that moment) it is hard to do so!"
